THIS IS THE BLOG/DIARY FOR MIGHTY GIRL ART™! OUR NEW WEBSITE IS LOCATED HERE!

* The purpose of our documentation is to provide a window into the creative process and the interactions within our circle. It keeps the memory of our work together alive and offers a touchstone to revisit later for further reflection by the facilitators, the parents and the children.

Women are the primary resource of the planet. They give birth, we come from them. They are mothers, they are visionaries, they are the future. If we can figure out how to make women feel safe and honor women, it would be parallel or equal to honoring life itself."

- Eve Ensler

Mighty Girl Art™ at Festival of Colors

Mighty Ones,
Don't forget that this SUNDAY (March 30th) is the Holi DC Festival of Colors!  Wear white, bring goggles (and a dust mask if sensitive) and get colorful!  There will be live music, great food, and lots of color.    Hope to see you there...

* Just got word that they changed the date to Sunday!

Mighty Girl Art™ at Maker Faire

"You don't make it with your hands.
You form it with your hands.
You make it with your mind." - Edgar Tolson

It was an exciting experience for all! The visitors came by the bus load (literally) and it was non-stop action. Creativity and joy all around. We are very grateful to all those who helped make this possible.

We set up on Saturday.  We stocked our tent with supplies and delicious treats for refueling.  On Sunday the curtains went up!  The music was  blasting and the making began!

We wanted to bring the vibe of Mighty Girl Art™ to Maker Faire so we incorporated as many nature elements as possible.

 Let your light shine!

"It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same." - Marianne Williamson

I made these woodland stanchions from fallen tree parts and torn fabric scraps.  The bases are made from fallen Cherry Tree. In Japan, they are known as sacred trees. They are a symbol of beauty, awakening and renewal.  These stanchions helped form lines to keep the creative flow.

 Sample dreads and color choices.

Daffodils are a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings. Victorian flower lore ascribes the daffodil to truth and honesty. Daffodils are associated with femininity and joy.

Look out world, we've got wool!  In the background, exquisite merino wool roving overflowing from baskets that hang from the ceiling of our tent.

Fun facts:
  • Mighty Chloe is a highly skilled crafter and talented actress.
  • Mighty Margaret is a talented illustrator, her spirit animal is wolf.
  • Mighty Mary is a manga expert and poet.

The amazing and beautiful Chelsea is a talented artist and my right arm in all things mighty.  She makes everything more magical!

Mighty Chloe on the walkie.

We used my son's walkies to stay in touch with the girls when they needed to take a break or go exploring - and - if things got hectic we could call for reinforcements.  We actually had to do that a few times.

Take a good look at this photo - THIS is how to rock it!

Let the making begin!

 1 2 3 ... create!

Dear Goggle Girl's Dad,
If you see this post, please contact us.
We seriously want to buy some of your goggles!

One of the mini-est makers to visit our tent.  She's making dreads to match the hat that she made earlier.

A really cool dude whose favorite color is pink.  We love him.

It was a sea of smiles and dread-heads.

Here, Mighty Christina, a talented maker and dancer, teaches a super hero how to make dreads.

AND THEN THIS HAPPENED...

This was the loveliest surprise ever!  In walked Cheryn.  Cheryn and I met via our blogs some 8 years ago. She and her family drove all the way from NJ to VA to attend Maker Faire where we finally met in person. Here I am clutching the beautiful necklace that she made me.

After the faire, the whole team went out to celebrate at a local fro-yo shop.

* The wool was purchased from the lovely Linda LaBelle of The Yarn Tree located in Asheville, NC.  Linda and I go way back...and were once a bridge apart.  She was located in Brooklyn and I in NYC.

We used uber soft merino in these shades:

  • Amethyst
  • Baltic
  • Borealis
  • Cranberry
  • Magenta
  • Midnight
  • Mojave
  • Tide Water
This diary entry is dedicated to all the people who helped make this event possible:  The hardworking Maker Faire Crew; all the generous people who donated funds for the supplies via Indiegogo; the Mighty Makers (Chelsea, Chloe, Christina, Mary, Margaret) and the Mighty Moms; my husband and son for hauling gear and delivering pizza and encouraging words; all those who dropped by to lend a hand, AND the courageous visitors who converged to MAKE cool stuff!

Made so and rooted by love,
Wendy

PS - for those who asked...here are some of the songs from the playlist we were spinning...
